Practices
Larson Farm and Creamery is a small family-run certified organic, certified 100% grass-fed dairy farm. All of our Jersey cows are DNA-tested to produce only the a2a2 Beta-casein milk, which many people find easier to digest. We are single-source, using only milk from our own cows which are pastured May through October. Calves are raised naturally on nurse cows and after weaning, join the age-integrated dairy herd as one big herd. are outside almost daily, they stay amazingly healthy and vigorous.
Our cows are not fed grain, which is not a natural food for ruminant cattle. Research shows that grain-fed cattle have much more Omega 6 in their milk and meat. 100% grass-fed cattle, however, have a much higher levels of healthy Omega-3 fatty acid profile.
No pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, etc. are ever used on our farm or applied to our animals, so you can be sure you are eating a pure un-contaminated food.
Soil health is a priority on Larson Farm. We work hard to reduce soil erosion and compaction and to maintain a healthy soil micro-biota. No artificial chemical fertilizers are applied. During the grazing season, the Jersey herd is moved three to four times a day into a fresh mini-paddock, a practice called 'mob grazing'. This mimics nature's way of large herds. The Jerseys eat the top half of the grasses and clovers which has the most digestible energy and leave their thank-you droppings for the soil micro-organisms and plants. They are then moved to a new mini-paddock for fresh pasture, water and shade. This system is more labor-intensive but results in healthier cows, soils and people. It also minimized the amount of expensive harvest equipment and fuel oil needed to produce food for our customers.
The Larson Farm and Creamery on-farm store is open to the public daily 7am to 7pm where our fresh Raw Milk is our cornerstone product. Visitors are invited to tour the farm.
